Remembering İlhan Mimaroğlu
Join us for a landmark celebration honoring the 100th birthday of İlhan Mimaroğlu, one of the most innovative and boundary-defying composers of the 20th century.
İlhan Mimaroğlu (1926-2012) was a pioneering Turkish-American composer, producer, and visionary who bridged worlds that rarely intersected. A groundbreaking figure in electronic and tape music, he worked at the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center alongside luminaries like Vladimir Ussachevsky and drew inspiration from Edgard Varèse. Born in Istanbul as the son of renowned architect Mimar Kemaleddin Bey, Mimaroğlu came to New York in 1955 on a Rockefeller Fellowship and became a singular force in the city's avant-garde scene. He defied categorization, producing landmark jazz recordings for Charles Mingus, Freddie Hubbard, and the Modern Jazz Quartet at Atlantic Records while simultaneously composing radical electronic works and founding the influential Finnadar label to release contemporary classical music. A Guggenheim Fellow, musicologist, photographer, and writer, Mimaroğlu created politically engaged compositions that challenged musical and social boundaries, from his requiem for victims of violence to collaborations with artist Jean Dubuffet.
