Her seventh CD, What times Are These, featuring her compositions comes out in April 2024. Nominated by the Jazz Journalists Association, “Flutist of Year“ 13 times, Jamie has placed in DownBeat polls annually since ’98. She’s led The Jamie Baum Septet+ since 1999, performing at most major jazz festival in the US and Europe where standing-ovations and glowing reviews were the norm. What Times Are These will be their 5th CD.
For this Sunnyside Records release What Times Are These, Baum's chosen 5 women poets of varying ages and ethnicities who address our current social-political concerns, and has composed music using their poems for lyrics! Poets include Adrienne Rich, Marge Piercy, Lucille Clifton, Tracy K. Smith and Naomi Shihab Nye. The compositions are all quite different ranging from astonishingly heat-felt beautiful melodies, hard-driving post-bop, to multi-metered, layered grooves that will make you want to move…. with the poems and their underlying concept being the unifying thread. CD release date: April 5, 2024.
“Baum premiered new music replete with
crisscrossing odd meters, unusual ensemble phrases, challenging structures…that produced wonderful solos…exhilarating…fresh music that opened new paths of improvisation and soloing possibilities for her tightly knit, extremely well-tuned Septet+…Baum writes for musicians and music lovers, compositions based in the past but not beholden to it, performed by musicians girded for exploration and challenge.” - Dizzy’s Jazz, Lincoln Center, NYC - DownBeat review (2/28/22)
“Baum glowed as she regaled us with beauty & intelligence…It must be incredibly freeing to write for a band that can literally make any sound or style they want appear like magic … all the colors of the musical rainbow were readily available, and we saw all of them over the course of the night.” - Senate Jazzstock, NY - Nippertown News review (3/10/23)
